This wiki is so dead and hurts my heart more than anything because no one can convince me this isn’t the greatest musical of all time. *sigh* But nonetheless I need to rant about its amazingness so in a few months when a tumbleweed comes through here maybe he’ll be able to read it 😂

Can we just take a second to appreciate the humanity of every character?

I feel like in every musical there’s at least one character who doesn’t have any flaws. Even if it’s a background character that gets like 2 seconds of showtimes, they still have no flaws displayed. And sure it’s probably made possible by the limited number of cast members but not a single character in this musical is perfect.

The obvious example is Evan. One thing I appreciate about musical theater at least on broadway, is that I’ve found it much more rare that the main character is flawless. Think Alexander Hamilton, Jeremy Heere, Seymour Krelborne. But still he’s a great example of how a character can be lovable and relatable, but also clearly in the wrong. There’s no excusing some of the things Evan does, and we all make mistakes like that. They really had no shame running into this musical. I feel like they trusted the audience to relate to Evan enough from the beginning that they didn’t need to make him perfect enough to route for. That wasn’t their concern. They just wanted him to be human. So they made him a pathological liar, they made him mean to his mom and his friends when it came down to it. I wouldn’t call him a villain because he always felt bad, and tried to change things in the end, but he wasn’t a perfect protagonist either.

What I appreciate the most though is the minor characters. It’s so easy to take a minor character and not put a ton of depth in. They’re just there to advance the plot why bother? But with every character in this musical they all have flaws. Cynthia won’t allow herself to see the truth about her son, stuck in constant denial of who he was. Zoe wouldn’t let herself see the good things about her brother, the complete opposite. Larry undermined Connors feelings, wracking it up to “looking for attention”, Jared is… Jared. And Alana was so desperate for attention and to further her cause she posted a private letter that could have gotten the Murphy’s seriously hurt. Heidi, while trying to make sure she could keep their income coming, neglected her sons feelings and never made time for him.

I think that’s one of the things that makes this musical feel so real, because no one is perfect, and it really shows that. Anyway thank you for reading my random rant 😂
